Objects are nouns or noun-equivalents with which something is being done in the sentence. Objects (∆) are placed after the subject (x) and the verb (o) in sentences with normal word order. If we want to accentuate the object, it is placed at the beginning of the sentence, and inversion is used.
Normal word order:
Anna | købte | en ny bil. | Anna | bought | a new car.
x | o | ∆ | x | o | ∆ |
Inversion:
En ny bil | købte | Anna. | Anna | bought | a new car.
∆ | o | x | x | o | ∆ |
Comparison:
The direct object is placed in the same way in English and in Danish. In English the direct object cannot be placed at the beginning of the sentence.
